Dalton Lake Canyon
Near Piedmont, South Dakota
Dalton Lake has a small campground with a self-service fee system,
and a rough trail leads southeast from the lake through the canyon itself.
At the east end, the trail comes out onto a gravel road which eventually
joins up with the frontage road along Interstate 90. To the west, a gravel
road joins the campground to Vanocker Canyon.
The creek flows alongside the gravel road to the campground.
Not a large lake, but a quiet and calm one.
Worms make art of old logs.
Past the lake, the creek is clear and slow.
Rock and water require each other.
The water continues to carve into the canyon, seams of granite slowing it.
In the dark shade of the canyon, moss and lichen flourish.
Granite and water in a very slow battle.
Plant, water, and rock.
